About coffee
Gitesi Coffee was founded by Alexis Gahizi and today his son Aimé has taken over the main operations of the washing station. The company has transformed itself from much more than a producer of coffee to becoming a key supporter of its community. All of Gitesi’s employees and farmers are neighbours to the washing station. Gitesi works closely with its surrounding community to provide training in areas such as finance as well the growing of alternative crops that can sustain and supplement income when it is not the coffee harvest season. One of the key projects that Gitesi Coffee has also worked on is a project to gift cows to its partner farmers. Aimé, a civil engineer by education, has developed his own filtration system to filter the used water that is used during the washing of the coffee. He has worked with other washing stations to install this filtration system. He has also developed a compost system that uses worms to more efficiently compost the cherry pulp which is then applied as compost to the coffee plants.
Looking towards the future, Gitesi Coffee is working towards improving their infrastructure and processing to ensure better consistency. They have also started doing research on coffee leaf tea, coffee flower tea, and cascara. They are also continuing their planting program to support future supply.
